G'day! If you spend 5 minutes in Australia, I can guarantee you'll hear some Aussie slang that will completely confuse you! So, for my help and your amusement, I've compiled a list of some phrases/slangs I've had to learn since arriving!

Slang 

  1. Arvo = afternoon
  2. Avo = avocado (not to be confused with arvo, like I did at first)
  3. Barbie = Barbecue (basically the only one I knew ahead of time)
  4. Bathers = swim suit
  5. Bikkie = biscuit (technically a cookie)
  6. Brekkie = Breakfast 
  7. Bubbler (QLD and NSW) = water fountain
  8. Bugga = an expression similar to "Oh, no!" or "That's sad" = "Aw, bugga!"
  9. Car park = parking lot/parking space
  10. Cuppa = cup of tea/coffee
  11. Chook = chicken 
  12. Devo = devastated 
  13. Doona = comforter
  14. Esky = cooler
  15. Fair dinkhum = fair enough/good point
  16. Good on ya! = Good job!
  17. How ya going? = What's up? How are you? 
  18. Jumper = sweater/jacket? (honestly still figuring this one out)
  19. Lollies = sweets/hard candy 
  20. Macca's = McDonald's
  21. No worries! = You're welcome, no problem, it's okay, etc. (used excessively here) 
  22. Res = on-campus residence halls
  23. Revision = Review ("revision" for an upcoming exam - I think this is British, too) 
  24. Roo (or kanga) = kangaroo 
  25. Servo = service/gas station
  26. Speed trap = speed bump
  27. Straya = how most Aussies say Australia since they shorten basically everything
  28. Sweet as/Cool as = just means sweet or cool, "as" is just for emphasis (first thought = sweet as what??? cool as WHAT??????)
  29. SWOTVAC = "Study Without Teaching Vacation" -- the week between the end of lectures and the beginning of exams; meant for studying but is usually spent doing anything but. 
  30. Take away = Take out 
  31. Thongs = flip flops
  32. Togs = also a swimsuit 
  33. Torch = flashlight 
  34. Ute = pickup truck  ​
